The Community Forestry Guidebook II: Effective Governance and Forest Management

In the face of many challenges related to a range of social, ecological, and ecomic factors, a growing number of British Columbia's forest-dependent communities see community forests as a way to stabilize their rural communities.

This guidebook by Susan Mulkey and Ken Day will be a valuable resource to those looking at the basics of community forest organizational governance and policy. It also provides communities with various aspects of operational community forest management.

Fish-stream Crossing Guidebook

The Guidebook addresses the requirements for fish passage in the Forest and Range Practices Act and regulations, and in the federal Fisheries Act. The Guidebook is a revision to the former Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Fish-stream Crossing Guidebook, March 2002. The main changes made are highlighted in Section 1.2 of the revised Guidebook.

The FPTWG includes scientific/technical experts from the BC Ministry of Environment; BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations; and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. You can learn more about the Working Group and their work in the above noted website.

The FPTWG acknowledges that recent amendments to the federal Fisheries Act and pending amendments to various regulations under that Act will likely require further revisions to the Guidebook in the future. At that time, the FPTWG also plans to update and broaden the scope of the document to provide more guidance on fish-stream crossing under other legal regimes.

The FPTWG also recognizes that other improvements can likely be made to the Guidebook based on operational use and experience. Dr. Wilford’s professional forestry experience spans 35 years, wherein he has dedicated his research to helping forest professionals and communities better manage BC’s forests through the integration of forestry and geoscience. He is also recognized for his dedicated support as a community volunteer.

2011 Professional Recognition Award

Congratulations to Todd Redding and Robin Pike for achieving the 2011 Professional Recognition Award for their dedicated work in compiling the Compendium of Forest Hydrology and Geomorphology in British Columbia (2010) for FORREX and the BC Ministry of Forests and Range Research Branch. The award was presented to them by the Canadian Water Resources Association, BC Branch.

At over 800 pages, the Compendium represents a significant contribution to knowledge in forest hydrology, geomorphology, and aquatic ecology research and practice in British Columbia. Valuable contributions were made by co-editors Kevin Bladon, Dan Moore, and Rita Winkler, as well as Chris Hollstedt, Julie Schooling, and Shelly Church.
